Chemical Composition of Sericite Mica
The main component is potassium-containing aluminum silicate, with the chemical formula
KAl₂(AlSi₃O₁₀)(OH)₂
- Silicon dioxide (SiO2): more than 50%
- Aluminum oxide (Al2O3): more than 30%
- Potassium oxide (K2O): more than 5%
- Trace elements: within 10%
Structure of Sericite Mica
- It possesses a layered structure similar to a mille-feuille.
- The floor of the thousand layered structure are negatively charged silicon and aluminum oxide. There are positively charged potassium ions existing in the interlayers, which attract the floors tightly to each other.
- The flat surface of the Sericite Mica layer carries negative charges, while the edges are positively charged.
